José James Sings Sinatra

  • Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre 1 Grand Avenue San Luis Obispo, CA, 93405 United States (map)

THU, FEB 11 | 7:30PM | SPANOS THEATRE | $55

Acclaimed jazz vocalist José James brings his soulful voice and contemporary artistry to José James Sings Sinatra, an intimate tribute to one of America’s most iconic singers. Widely regarded as one of the leading jazz voices of his generation, James has earned international acclaim for his genre-defying blend of jazz, soul, hip-hop, and R&B, along with collaborations and performances with many of today’s leading jazz artists and ensembles.

A lifelong admirer of Frank Sinatra, James was invited to record “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” for the blockbuster film Fifty Shades Darker (2017) and later contributed “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” to the film’s soundtrack. That experience inspired a deeper exploration of Sinatra’s artistry, leading James to reexamine the legendary singer not only as an icon, but as a master jazz interpreter.

Performing with an exceptional trio, James brings warmth, sophistication, and fresh perspective to beloved classics including “Come Fly With Me,” “My Way,” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” The result is an elegant evening that celebrates the enduring swing, style, and soul of the Great American Songbook.

Sounds like the result of the black-pop continuum, jazz and soul and hip-hop and R&B, slow-cooked for more than 50 years.
